Experience: The Announcers (1990-2004); WYRK, WHTT,
WLVL Radio
Influences: Eric Clapton, B.B.
King
Equipment: Fender Stratocaster, Epiphone
Les Paul, Traynor Amplification
At 13 he would hole up in the basement with a set of
headphones and wear out Blood, Sweat & Tears records trying to sound like
David Clayton Thomas. By 20 it was Peter
Gabriel and Genesis. Then came: BB King, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, and a whole
list of people who sang with power and emotion.
That’s what Larry “The Bear” McFarland brings to the Soul
Barons.
“If even for one moment during the course of an evening
I can send a shiver down someone’s spine and make them turn around and go,
“Wow!” then I’ve done my job as a singer. I want them to feel the song, not just
hear it.”
Larry took the long way around into the music business,
but things changed when he met Tom Schuh.
“Tom hired me as his Production Director when he was
programming WHTT, Oldies 104, back in 1990.
I had been putting together a band with some other radio guys. We called it The Announcers. It never really got off the ground until Tom
joined us on guitar. We kicked that dog
around for the next 14 years. We had a
blast!”
His days of fighting the radio wars behind him, Larry’s
day-time job is with Lake Shore Behavioral Health in their Homeless Services
program as a housing specialist. He
lives in Niagara Country with his wife of 17 years Michelle and their three
dogs.
“I feel very lucky to be in the Soul Barons. It’s a great bunch of guys and an amazing
collection of musicians. Every night I
am just in awe of their talent. We all
bring something different to the party and it works! I hope that everyone who comes to see us has
as much fun as we do.”
